Painting (interior & exterior)

What to consider before tackling your own painting project.

Painting seems like a fairly easy project for most home owners.  When most homeowners tackle remodeling projects, painting seems to be one thing that they tend to take on themselves. If you’re talking about an interior project, such as a basement remodel, or a room addition, the savings can be significant. Depending on the size of project homeowners can potentially save upwards of a couple of thousand dollars. But I have to warn you, painting is not as easy as one may think, especially when there is a lot of base trim, door trim and doors to be painted.  Painting walls with fresh drywall & mud takes a lot of time & effort as well.  Most home owners do not own the proper painting tools for painting fresh walls. Professional painters know exactly what types of rollers & brushes it takes to be more efficient. Professional painters also know how to properly cut in trim, walls & ceilings in order to make them look clean without flashing.  Caulking is also something painters take care of which is an art form in itself. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, unless you know what you’re doing even for something as simple as painting, leave it to the professionals. But if you are intent on tackling the job yourself, take a trip to the local Sherwin Williams, and ask a few questions on techniques & proper tools, the staff there will be more than helpful.
